# The Time Off to Vote Act: What It Means for Workers

This bill requires employers to give workers paid time off to vote in federal elections. Specifically, any company with 25 or more employees must give workers at least 2 consecutive hours of paid leave whenever there's a federal election—whether that's a presidential election, midterm election, or any other federal voting day. Workers can use this time to vote in person, drop off a mail-in ballot, or handle other voting-related activities. The key word here is "paid"—this time off doesn't come out of your vacation days or sick leave, and you don't lose any benefits you've already earned.

The employer gets to decide when during the day you take this time off. They can require you to vote during early voting periods instead of on election day itself, or they can pick specific hours that work for their business. However, they can't count your lunch break or other regular breaks as part of your 2-hour voting window. This gives companies some flexibility in managing their operations while still guaranteeing workers the time they need to vote.

The bill also includes strong protections against retaliation. Employers can't punish, fire, or discriminate against workers for taking voting leave, and they can't retaliate against anyone who complains about violations or participates in an investigation. If a company breaks these rules, they can face civil penalties up to $10,000 per violation. The Department of Labor will handle enforcement, similar to how they handle other employment law violations. It's worth noting that this law only applies to companies with at least 25 employees, so very small businesses are exempt. Additionally, if your state or local area already requires more generous voting time off, that law still applies—this bill sets a minimum floor, not a ceiling.
