# The Help America Run Act: Making It Easier for Working People to Run for Office

Right now, federal election law says that campaign money can't be used to pay for everyday personal expenses like rent, food, or childcare—things candidates need whether they're running for office or not. The idea behind this rule was to prevent candidates from using campaign funds for their own benefit. But in practice, it creates a major barrier for working people who want to run for Congress. If you're a teacher, nurse, or small business owner who needs a paycheck to cover your bills and childcare, you can't use campaign donations to help with those costs while you're campaigning. This means you either have to be wealthy enough to support yourself without working, or you simply can't afford to run. The Help America Run Act changes this by allowing candidates to use campaign funds to pay for childcare, eldercare, health insurance premiums, and similar services for dependents.

The bill's supporters argue this rule currently favors the rich and well-connected. They point out that Congress doesn't reflect everyday America—fewer than 5 percent of representatives have blue-collar backgrounds, and lawmakers are on average 18 times wealthier than typical Americans. Women are particularly affected because they still shoulder most childcare responsibilities, which may explain why only 12 women in history have given birth while serving in Congress. By allowing campaign funds to cover these essential services, the bill aims to level the playing field so that working mothers, young professionals, and people caring for elderly parents can actually afford to run for office.

There's one important limitation: if you're already serving in Congress, you can't use campaign funds for health insurance premiums, though you can still use them for childcare and eldercare. This distinction exists because sitting members of Congress already have access to federal employee health insurance. The bill takes effect immediately upon passage, meaning candidates could start using campaign funds for these services right away if it becomes law.
