# The SAFES Act: A Tax Credit for Gun Safes

This bill creates a tax credit that gives people money back on their taxes when they buy gun safes. Specifically, if you purchase a gun safe, lock box, or similar storage device designed to prevent unauthorized access to firearms, you can claim a credit worth 90 percent of what you spent on it. For single filers, the maximum credit is $500 per year, and for couples filing jointly, it's $1,000 per year. However, there's a catch: you can only claim this credit once every six years, so you can't use it repeatedly year after year.

The credit applies to any gun safe purchased starting in 2026, as long as it has a combination lock, key lock, or biometric lock (like a fingerprint scanner). The bill specifically excludes used safes—you have to buy new ones to qualify. One important protection included in the bill is that you won't have to tell the government anything about what firearms you own to claim this credit; it's purely about the safe itself.

Starting in 2031, there's an additional requirement: the government will need to evaluate which types of gun safes are most effective at preventing unauthorized access, and only those approved safes would qualify for the credit going forward. Until that evaluation happens, any gun safe meeting the basic definition qualifies. The bill is essentially designed to incentivize people to store their firearms securely by making it cheaper to buy the storage devices needed to do so.
