# The TRUST Act Explained

This bill creates a special fund called the Tariff Trust Fund that would collect extra money from tariffs (taxes on imported goods) and use it to pay down the national debt. Here's how it would work: if the U.S. government is running a budget deficit—meaning it's spending more money than it takes in—and that deficit continues into the next year, then any tariff money collected above what was collected in 2025 gets set aside in this new fund specifically for reducing the deficit.

The practical effect is that tariff revenue would be redirected away from general government spending and locked in for one purpose only: paying down debt. The bill starts this process on October 1, 2025. So if the government collects $50 billion in tariffs in a given year, but only collected $40 billion in 2025, that extra $10 billion would go into the Tariff Trust Fund rather than being available for other government programs or operations.

For everyday people, this matters because tariffs ultimately get passed along to consumers through higher prices on imported goods. This bill essentially says that if we're going to charge those extra tariffs, at least some of that money will go toward reducing the national debt rather than funding other government activities.
