The TREATS Act changes this by allowing doctors to conduct one of these required evaluations through telehealth—meaning a video call or phone appointment—for specific FDA-approved opioid addiction medications (like buprenorphine and naltrexone, but not methadone).

The practical impact is significant for people in rural areas, those without reliable transportation, people with work or childcare obligations, or anyone who lives far from addiction treatment specialists. Instead of having to travel to a clinic for an initial evaluation, they could have that first appointment from home. Patients would still need at least one in-person medical evaluation at some point, but the flexibility to do one evaluation remotely removes a major barrier that often prevents people from seeking help. This is especially important because addiction treatment works best when people can access it quickly and conveniently—delays often mean people don't get treatment at all.
