# The Gulf of Mexico Commerce Protection Act

This bill blocks the government from creating a "slow zone" for ships in the Gulf of Mexico until officials prove that such a rule won't harm businesses and shipping. The slowdown zone idea comes from efforts to protect an endangered whale species called Rice's whales, which are at risk of being hit by large ships. This study has to be submitted to Congress within 60 days of completion. The bill also requires government agencies to develop alternative ways to protect the whales that don't involve nighttime transit bans or permanent slow zones—essentially asking them to find other solutions that might be less disruptive to shipping.
