# Understanding the PFAS Free Military Purchasing Act

The military buys a lot of everyday items—from cookware in military dining halls to carpets in barracks to uniforms for soldiers. This bill tells the Department of Defense to stop purchasing products that contain certain chemicals called PFAS (pronounced "pee-fas"), which stands for perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances. These are human-made chemicals that have been used for decades to make things water-resistant, stain-resistant, and nonstick, but they've become a major environmental and health concern because they don't break down in nature and can accumulate in people's bodies.

The bill creates a two-phase approach. Starting April 1, 2023, the military can't buy nonstick cookware or furniture treated with stain-resistant coatings if they contain two specific PFAS chemicals: PFOS and PFOA. Then, beginning April 1, 2025, the restrictions expand significantly. The military will be prohibited from purchasing a much wider range of items containing any of fourteen different PFAS chemicals. This includes not just cookware and furniture, but also food packaging, cleaning products, floor waxes, carpeting, curtains, sunscreen, and shoes or clothing where the PFAS treatment isn't absolutely necessary for the item to function. The military won't have to throw out items it already owns—the ban only applies to new purchases going forward.

The bill also requires the Department of Defense to report annually to Congress about what steps it's taking to identify and reduce PFAS in military purchases. However, the military doesn't have to test every item to prove it's PFAS-free; suppliers are expected to provide products that meet the requirements. This change affects military personnel and their families who use these items in military facilities, and it signals that the government is taking PFAS contamination seriously as a public health issue, potentially encouraging private companies to develop and use safer alternatives.
