# What This Bill Does: Faster Infant Formula Safety Alerts

This bill creates a faster warning system for dangerous infant formula. Right now, if a formula manufacturer discovers a problem—like contamination or missing nutrients—there's no strict requirement to tell the government quickly. This bill changes that by requiring manufacturers to notify the FDA within 24 hours if they discover their formula might be unsafe or contaminated with harmful bacteria. The goal is to catch problems before they reach store shelves and hurt babies.

The bill also creates a new "Office of Critical Foods" director whose job is to act fast when these warnings come in. Within 72 hours of getting a notification, this director must contact the manufacturer to discuss what they're doing to fix the problem. If the director doesn't respond within that timeframe, they have to explain to Congress why they failed. Within 90 days, the director must confirm that the manufacturer is actually taking corrective action and figuring out what caused the problem in the first place. This creates accountability at every step—if government officials are slow to respond, Congress gets notified.

The practical impact is that parents should get faster warnings about dangerous formula, and manufacturers face real pressure to act immediately when they discover issues. The bill also requires manufacturers to share test samples with the government so officials can study contamination patterns. Every year through 2026, the FDA must report to Congress how many problems were reported, how fast they responded, and whether the system is actually working. This is essentially a response to the 2022 infant formula shortage and contamination crisis, designed to make sure similar problems are caught and handled much more quickly in the future.
