Katie Meyer's Law requires colleges and universities to give students accused of breaking school rules the right to have an adviser help them through the disciplinary process. When a student is notified that they've allegedly violated their school's code of conduct, the school must tell them they can choose to have either an outside adviser of their choosing or an independent adviser provided by the school itself. These advisers can be coordinators hired by the school, peer support programs, or alumni-based support groups.

The adviser's job is to help the student navigate the investigation and hearing process. They need to be trained on how the school handles these cases, can receive updates about what's happening (with the student's permission), and can either advocate for the student or participate in other ways allowed by state law and federal Title IX rules. To receive federal education funding, colleges must adopt this policy and make sure students know about these adviser options when they're accused of misconduct.

Additionally, the law requires colleges to report suicide incidents to campus security and local police, and to include information about these incidents in their annual crime statistics reports. This transparency requirement helps ensure that schools are documenting and addressing mental health crises on campus.
