# Understanding the Protections for Student Veterans Act

If you're a military member using education benefits to attend college, this bill protects you when you get called away to serve. Right now, if you're ordered to active duty or training while enrolled in school, you might face penalties like failing grades, reduced GPAs, or financial charges from your college. This bill says colleges can't do that anymore.

Here's what changes: When you receive military orders for active duty, inactive-duty training, or state active duty, you can either withdraw from your classes or take a leave of absence without your school punishing you. If you withdraw completely, the college must refund all your tuition and fees for that term, including housing costs. If you take a leave of absence instead, the school has to mark your grades as "incomplete" rather than failing, and they're required to let you finish the coursework when you return from service, as long as it's practical to do so. The bill specifically blocks colleges from assigning failing grades, lowering your GPA, marking your absence as unexcused, or charging you any financial penalties just because you left for military service.

This applies to any military member—active duty, reserves, or National Guard—who's using federal education benefits to pay for college. The protections cover any accredited college or university. Essentially, the bill recognizes that military service obligations shouldn't derail your education or damage your academic record, and it gives you a clean way to pause your studies when duty calls and resume them when you return.

Protections for Student Veterans Act This bill authorizes service members who are utilizing Department of Veterans Affairs educational assistance benefits to withdraw or take a leave of absence after they receive orders for active service, inactive-duty training, or state active duty. Institutions of higher education are prohibited from taking adverse actions against such service members for withdrawing or taking a leave of absence, including <ul> <li>assigning a failing grade,</li> <li>reducing the member's grade point average,</li> <li>characterizing any absence as unexcused, or</li> <li> assessing financial penalties.</li> </ul> The bill requires institutions of higher education to refund all tuition and fees (including for housing) for the academic term for which the service member withdraws. In situations where the service member takes a leave of absence, the institution of higher education must assign a grade of incomplete for the applicable term and permit the member to complete the academic term after the period of service.
