# Understanding the COUPLES HSA Act

This bill makes a change to how married couples can save money in Health Savings Accounts (HSAs). Right now, if you're married and have family health insurance through your employer, there are strict limits on how much you and your spouse can contribute to an HSA each year. The bill removes one of those restrictions so that both spouses can make "catch-up contributions" to the same account if they're both over 55 years old.

Here's what that means in practical terms: HSAs are special savings accounts where you can set aside pre-tax money to pay for medical expenses. People who are 55 or older can contribute extra money beyond the normal yearly limit—this is called a catch-up contribution. Currently, if you're married with family coverage, only one spouse can make these catch-up contributions. Under this bill, both spouses could make catch-up contributions to a single joint HSA, essentially doubling the amount of money a couple could set aside for healthcare costs in retirement.

The change would apply to tax years starting after December 31, 2023. This would primarily benefit married couples where both spouses are 55 or older and have family health insurance coverage. It gives them more flexibility to save for medical expenses in retirement, which can be significant. The bill doesn't change anything for couples where only one spouse is over 55, and it doesn't affect people who aren't married or those with individual health insurance coverage.
