# What the Commission on the American Workforce Act Does

This bill creates a temporary government commission to study why the American workforce has changed over the past decade and what those changes mean for the country. Think of it as assembling a team of experts to investigate major shifts in how Americans work and what's causing them.

The commission will examine a wide range of factors that have affected employment, including the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2008 financial crisis, the rise of remote work, the gig economy (like Uber and freelancing), outsourcing of jobs overseas, changes in education levels, and even shifts in family structures like more single-parent households. The group will also look at how these workforce changes have impacted different regions of the country, specific groups of people, and various industries—from small businesses to large corporations. They'll investigate whether these changes have affected things like mental health, drug use, tax revenue, military readiness, and manufacturing output.

The commission will consist of 12 members appointed by congressional leaders from both parties, and they're supposed to be experts in areas like economics, human resources, labor, or public policy. These members will hold hearings, gather testimony, and request data from government agencies to complete their investigation. The commission has about a year to do its work, starting with an interim report after four months and a final report after one year. Once they submit their final report with findings and recommendations to Congress, the commission will shut down 60 days later.
