# What This Bill Does

This bill asks the government's top auditor—called the Comptroller General—to investigate where the Department of Defense is getting the military equipment and parts it buys. Right now, the military doesn't always track whether the things it purchases come from the United States, allied countries, or potentially unfriendly nations. This bill wants to shine a light on that situation by requiring a detailed study and report.

The Comptroller General has until July 31, 2024, to complete this investigation and present findings to Congress. The report needs to answer three main questions: First, how many military purchases don't even require checking where the items come from? Second, what risks exist when the military buys from countries that aren't U.S. allies or partners? And third, what plans does the military have to fix these problems, such as finding alternative suppliers or developing backup supply chains?

 <p>This bill requires the Government Accountability Office to study the degree to which the Department of Defense is dependent on entities located in foreign countries for the procurement of end items (i.e., final products when assembled or completed and ready for issue, delivery, or deployment) and components (i.e., parts of end items or other components).</p>
