# What This Bill Does

Right now, most of the United States switches between standard time and daylight saving time twice a year—springing forward in March and falling back in November. This bill would let individual states choose to stay on daylight saving time all year long if they want to, without switching back and forth.

Currently, states can only opt out of daylight saving time entirely and stay on standard time year-round. A few states like Hawaii and most of Arizona already do this. But this bill adds a new option: states could instead choose to keep daylight saving time permanently, meaning it would stay lighter later in the evenings throughout the entire year, including winter months. States could make this choice for their whole state or just for parts of it that fall within different time zones.

The practical effect would be that if your state chose this option, you'd never have to change your clocks again—at least not for daylight saving time. You'd get those extra evening daylight hours year-round. However, this also means winter mornings would be darker. The bill essentially gives states more flexibility to decide their own time preferences rather than being locked into the current system of mandatory clock changes twice a year. It's worth noting this doesn't change anything automatically—states would have to actively pass their own laws to adopt year-round daylight saving time if this bill becomes law.
