The SAFE Taps Act creates a federal grant program to help communities replace lead pipes and contaminated water lines. Right now, about 9.2 million lead service lines—the pipes that bring water from main water lines into homes, schools, and childcare centers—are delivering water across the country. Since there's no safe level of lead exposure and it causes serious brain damage in children and health problems in adults, the EPA has ordered communities to replace these pipes within 10 years.
