# Understanding the Bidirectional Electric Vehicle Charging Act

This bill is about making electric vehicles smarter by letting them do something they mostly can't do today: send power back to the electrical grid or your home. Right now, when you charge an EV, electricity flows one way—from the grid into your car's battery. Bidirectional charging flips that around, allowing your car's battery to push power back out when needed. To enforce this requirement, the bill creates penalties for car manufacturers who don't comply—up to $21,000 per vehicle that violates the rule, with a maximum penalty of $105 million for related violations. The bill also requires states and local governments to include bidirectional charging in their disaster recovery plans, recognizing that during emergencies, EVs could serve as mobile power supplies to keep critical facilities and homes running.
