This bill creates a new federal program to help cities that host major international sporting events—like the Olympics, Paralympics, or FIFA World Cups—pay for transportation improvements. The idea is that when a city gets selected to host one of these big events, it needs better roads, public transit, airports, and rail connections to handle the huge influx of visitors. Instead of leaving cities to figure this out alone, the federal government will provide grants of up to $10 million per host city to fund transportation projects within 100 miles of the event location. The money can go toward things like expanding bus service, improving roads, upgrading airports, or enhancing rail connections—basically any transportation project that helps move people and goods during the event or prevents traffic problems. The bill also requires the Department of Transportation to provide planning help and technical assistance to cities preparing for these events, starting up to 5 years before the event begins. However, the money cannot be used for temporary structures built just for the event itself, and it can't help cities pay for the costs of bidding to host an event in the first place.
