# Black Lung Benefits Improvement Act of 2023

This bill makes major changes to how coal miners and their families get benefits when they develop black lung disease—a serious lung condition caused by breathing coal dust over many years. The law aims to make it easier for sick miners to get the compensation they're entitled to and to fix problems that have made the process unfairly difficult.

The core problem this bill addresses is that coal miners with black lung disease often struggle to prove they're sick enough to qualify for benefits, even when they clearly are.
