# Same Day Registration Act of 2021

This bill would require every state to allow people to register to vote on Election Day itself, rather than forcing them to register weeks or months in advance. Right now, most states have registration deadlines that fall somewhere between a few days and several weeks before an election. If you miss that deadline, you can't vote in that election, even if you're completely eligible. This bill would change that by letting anyone who's qualified to vote register at their polling place on the day they want to cast their ballot, or during any early voting period.

The practical effect is straightforward: it removes a major barrier that prevents eligible voters from participating in elections. Someone who just moved to a new state, forgot to register, or didn't realize they needed to register ahead of time could still vote in federal elections (for president, Congress, and similar offices). They'd fill out a registration form at the polling place and then cast their vote the same day. The bill would apply to all federal elections starting with the 2022 midterm elections and continuing forward.

There's one exception built into the bill: states that don't require voter registration at all—like North Dakota, which has no registration requirement—wouldn't need to change anything. For every other state, this would be a significant shift in how voting works. Supporters argue it would increase voter participation and reduce confusion about registration deadlines. Critics have raised concerns about whether election officials could process registrations quickly enough on Election Day and whether it could create administrative challenges at polling places.
