Right now, if you need multiple security clearances from the TSA—like if you work in ports, drive hazardous materials, or want TSA PreCheck for faster airport screening—you have to go through separate application processes for each one. This bill simplifies that mess by requiring the TSA to create one unified enrollment system where you can apply for multiple programs at the same time.

Here's what changes: Instead of filling out different applications, visiting different centers, and getting vetted separately for each program, you'd go to one TSA enrollment center once, complete one application, and get screened once. That single background check and vetting process would then count toward all the programs you're applying for. So if you pass the security screening for one program, you don't have to prove yourself all over again for the others. The bill also requires that when you renew your clearances, they all expire on the same date, so you're not constantly renewing different programs at different times.

The main people affected are workers in transportation and maritime industries who need multiple TSA clearances—truck drivers hauling hazardous materials, port workers, and frequent business travelers. Instead of spending time and money going through multiple separate processes, they'd do it once. The bill also specifies that getting multiple clearances shouldn't cost more than getting one, so you won't face extra fees. The TSA has two years to make this happen and must update Congress on their progress after six months.

TSA Security Threat Assessment Application Modernization Act This bill requires the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) to standardize the enrollment and renewal system for individuals applying for or renewing multiple TSA Security Threat Assessment programs, including the Transportation Worker Identification Credential, Hazardous Materials Endorsement, and TSA PreCheck programs. The standardization shall permit an individual to (1) enroll at a TSA-designated universal enrollment center once and use the application for one of such programs to enroll in two or more of such programs,with specified exceptions for those applying for or renewing enrollment in more than one program at different times; (2) apply successful, valid clearance results from a TSA Security Threat Assessment to satisfy vetting requirements for participation in any related program without additional cost; and (3) undergo a streamlined and expeditious renewal process. Additionally, the TSA must publish on its website information relating to the standardization of the enrollment system.
