# The TIGER Act: What It Does

The TIGER Act makes it easier and faster for the U.S. government to sell military equipment and weapons to foreign countries. Right now, when the government wants to sell defense items to another nation, there are dollar thresholds that trigger different levels of review and congressional notification. This bill raises those thresholds significantly—for example, increasing one threshold from $14 million to $23 million and another from $50 million to $83 million. The practical effect is that more weapons sales can happen with less oversight and fewer bureaucratic steps, allowing the government to move faster when selling military gear to allies.

The bill also adds a new requirement for very large sales. When a proposed sale exceeds three times the normal threshold (so deals worth roughly $70 million or more under the new numbers), the State Department must consult with the Defense Department and other agencies, then report to Congress about the sale and whether the delivery timeline serves U.S. interests. If a sale hasn't been delivered within three years, the government is supposed to use special authorities to speed up the process—though the Secretary of State can waive this requirement if they explain why to Congress.

Additionally, the bill gives the Defense Department new power to transfer money to the State Department to fund these military sales through a special acquisition fund, and it requires only 15 days' notice to Congress before doing so. This streamlines the financial side of weapons sales, making it quicker for the government to facilitate these transactions without going through the normal budget approval process. Overall, the TIGER Act is designed to accelerate military sales to allied nations by reducing red tape and increasing the dollar amounts that can be sold without triggering the highest levels of review.
