This bill makes an important change to how the federal government recognizes and serves Middle Eastern and North African (MENA) communities in health programs. Right now, when federal health agencies work to reduce health disparities and improve health outcomes for minority groups, they focus on Black, Hispanic, Asian American, Native American, and Pacific Islander populations—but they don't officially include MENA individuals, even though research shows this community faces significant health disparities. This bill fixes that by officially adding MENA individuals (including Lebanese, Iranian, Egyptian, Moroccan, Palestinian, Kurdish, and other groups from the Middle East and North Africa) to the federal definition of "racial and ethnic minority groups" used by the Department of Health and Human Services. This change means MENA communities would become eligible for health programs, resources, and support designed to address health disparities. The bill also requires the federal government to conduct a comprehensive study of MENA health to understand what health challenges this community faces—looking at everything from chronic diseases like diabetes and heart disease to mental health, maternal health, and the social factors that affect health like income, education, and access to healthcare. The study will break down results by different MENA subpopulations to show how health outcomes vary. Once completed, the government will create a public website where people can access the study's findings and data.
