# Understanding the PFAS Action Act of 2023

This bill takes aim at a group of chemicals called PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) that have become a widespread environmental and health concern. These are human-made chemicals found in thousands of everyday products—from non-stick cookware and water-resistant clothing to food packaging and firefighting foam. The problem is that PFAS don't break down naturally in the environment, they accumulate in our bodies over time, and they've contaminated drinking water supplies across the country.

The bill requires the EPA to officially label two of the most common PFAS chemicals—PFOA and PFOS—as hazardous substances within 60 days. Within five years, the EPA must decide whether to classify all other PFAS chemicals the same way. The bill also requires manufacturers to conduct comprehensive testing on all PFAS chemicals to better understand their health and environmental impacts, with testing rules to be finalized within two years.

Beyond regulation, the bill funds practical solutions to protect people right now. It establishes grant programs to help communities upgrade water treatment infrastructure to remove PFAS, provides funding specifically for testing and filtering drinking water in schools, and creates a website to help homeowners test their private well water. The bill also requires companies to disclose when they're introducing PFAS into products and establishes standards for labeling products as "PFAS-free." Additionally, it restricts the incineration of PFAS-containing waste and directs the EPA to develop drinking water standards and pollution limits for these chemicals.
