# Understanding the PROTECT Act of 2023

This bill targets a group of chemicals called "forever chemicals" that are used in many everyday products but can stick around in the environment and our bodies for decades. The bill directs the EPA to officially classify these chemicals as hazardous air pollutants, which is a big deal because it triggers strict regulations on how companies can release them into the air.

These forever chemicals, known as PFAS (perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances), are found in things like non-stick cookware, water-resistant clothing, food packaging, and firefighting foam. They've been detected in drinking water supplies across the country and have been linked to health concerns including cancer, thyroid disease, and immune system problems. Right now, there's no comprehensive federal rule limiting how much of these chemicals companies can emit into the air, so this bill would change that by requiring the EPA to create one within about six months of the bill becoming law.

Once the EPA officially lists these chemicals as hazardous, the bill also requires them to identify which industries and facilities are the major sources of these emissions within a year. This means factories, manufacturers, and other businesses that release these chemicals would face new requirements to monitor and reduce their emissions. For everyday people, this could mean cleaner air and water in communities near these facilities, though it might also lead to higher prices for products that currently rely on these chemicals since companies would need to invest in new manufacturing processes or find safer alternatives.

The bill essentially closes a regulatory gap that has allowed these persistent chemicals to accumulate in the environment largely unchecked, giving the EPA the legal authority to finally crack down on air pollution from these substances.
