# Farm Freedom to Repair Act

Right now, many modern farm tractors and other agricultural equipment contain computer systems that manufacturers lock down with digital protections. If something breaks or needs maintenance, farmers often can't fix it themselves or take it to an independent repair shop—they have to go back to the equipment manufacturer, which can be expensive and time-consuming. This bill changes that by making it legal for farmers and independent repair technicians to bypass those digital locks specifically for diagnosing, maintaining, and repairing farm equipment.

The bill targets a federal law called the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, which currently makes it illegal to break through any digital protection on a product, even if you own it. Under current law, a farmer technically can't legally circumvent the security features on their own tractor to fix a problem, and companies that make repair tools or parts for independent shops could face legal trouble too. This bill carves out a specific exception for agricultural equipment, allowing farmers to access the software and systems they need to keep their machines running without violating copyright law.

This matters because farm equipment is expensive and downtime during planting or harvest season can be devastating to a farmer's livelihood. By allowing farmers and independent repair shops to fix equipment without manufacturer permission, the bill could reduce repair costs, speed up service times, and give farmers more control over their own property. It also protects companies that make diagnostic tools and replacement parts for the independent repair market, which currently operate in a legal gray area. Essentially, it's about giving farmers the same right to repair their equipment that they've always had with mechanical machines, but extended to the digital components that increasingly control modern farm equipment.
