# The DASHBOARD Act: What You Need to Know About Your Data

This bill is about giving people more control and transparency over the personal data that big tech companies collect about them. Specifically, it targets large companies that make money by collecting, selling, or sharing information about what you do online—companies like Facebook, Google, Amazon, and similar data-heavy businesses.

The bill requires these major data companies to tell you three important things on a regular basis (at least every 90 days): exactly what types of information they're collecting about you, how much they think your data is worth in dollars, and what they're doing with your information beyond just running their main service. For example, if a company collects your browsing habits, location data, or shopping preferences, they have to spell out how they're using that data—whether they're selling it to advertisers, using it to build profiles about you, or sharing it with other companies. You'd also get the right to delete all your data or specific pieces of it through a simple setting, similar to how you might delete your account today. The only exceptions are when companies are legally required to keep your data, need it for legal disputes, or must retain it to catch fraud or security threats.

For publicly traded companies (ones whose stock you can buy), the bill adds another layer: they'd have to disclose in their financial reports how much money they're making from your data and what their data holdings are worth. This helps investors understand how much of a company's profits come from data collection, and it gives regulators better visibility into the data economy. The Federal Trade Commission gets authority to enforce these rules and can fine companies that don't comply. Essentially, the bill treats your personal data like a valuable asset that belongs to you, and it forces companies to be honest about how they're profiting from it.

Designing Accounting Safeguards to Help Broaden Oversight And Regulations on Data Act of 2022 or the DASHBOARD Act of 2022 This bill requires commercial data operators (i.e., large consumer online services providers or data brokers) to disclose to users what types of user data are collected, and the usage and value of that data. Commercial data operators must also provide users with a way to delete this data. Violations of these requirements are enforced by the Federal Trade Commission. Commercial data operators that issue securities must report the value of their user data and the value of any third-party contracts made for the collection of user data.
