# Understanding the PROTECT Act of 2022

This bill targets a group of chemicals called "forever chemicals" because they don't break down in the environment or in our bodies. Specifically, it tells the EPA to officially classify a whole category of these chemicals—known as perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS)—as hazardous air pollutants. This is important because once something gets that official label, it triggers strict regulations on how much of it companies can release into the air.

The bill requires the EPA to make this decision within six months of the law passing. Then, within a year after that, the EPA has to figure out which industries and facilities actually produce or use these chemicals so they can set specific emission limits for each type of source. This means factories, manufacturing plants, and other businesses that create or work with these chemicals would face new rules about how much they can release into the air we breathe.

Why does this matter to regular people? PFAS chemicals show up everywhere—in non-stick cookware, water-resistant clothing, food packaging, and firefighting foam used at airports and military bases. They've contaminated drinking water supplies in communities across the country, and studies suggest they may pose health risks. By regulating these chemicals as air pollutants, the bill aims to prevent more of them from entering the environment through factory emissions. This could reduce contamination in the long run, though it might also increase costs for companies that use these chemicals, which could eventually affect product prices.

PROTECT Act of 2022

Prevent Release Of Toxics Emissions, Contamination, and Transfer Act of 2022 or the PROTECT Act of 2022 This bill requires the Environmental Protection Agency to (1) issue a final rule adding perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) with at least one fully fluorinated carbon atom to the list of hazardous air pollutants, and (2) revise the list of air pollution sources within 365 days after issuing the rule to include categories and subcategories of major sources and area sources of PFAS. PFAS are man-made and may have adverse human health effects. A variety of products contain the compounds, such as nonstick cookware or weatherproof clothing.
