This bill makes sure that people who don't speak English well can access information and programs about preventing gun violence. Right now, many gun violence prevention resources—like information about extreme risk protection orders (which temporarily remove guns from people in crisis) and safe gun storage tips—are only available in English. This creates a barrier for millions of Americans who speak other languages at home.

The bill requires the Department of Justice and Department of Health and Human Services to translate all important gun violence prevention materials into the 10 most commonly spoken languages in the U.S. (including Mandarin, Cantonese, Japanese, and Korean). Before these translations are published, community organizations that work with speakers of those languages must review them to make sure they're culturally appropriate and actually make sense to the people who will use them.

The bill also directs federal agencies to work with community-based organizations serving non-English speakers and to launch public awareness campaigns specifically targeting limited English proficient populations. When the government gives grants to organizations working on gun violence prevention, it will prioritize applications that show they have real plans to reach and engage with non-English speaking communities. Essentially, this bill removes language as an obstacle to accessing potentially life-saving gun violence prevention information and services.
