The MOLD Act (Military Occupancy Living Defense Act) is designed to protect military families living in privatized military housing from mold and other environmental hazards. Right now, thousands of military families are dealing with serious mold problems, water damage, and poor maintenance in their homes, and many have had to pay out of their own pockets for temporary housing, medical bills, and property damage. The military's health insurance (TRICARE) doesn't even cover mold-related medical expenses. This bill creates a comprehensive system to fix that problem. The Department of Defense will establish clear health and safety standards for humidity, ventilation, and water intrusion in all military family housing. Independent inspectors will regularly check homes for mold and environmental problems—when families move in, when they report problems, and after any repairs are made. If a home fails inspection, families must be relocated within 30 days if they want to be. Housing contractors will now be responsible for paying for all inspections, repairs, relocations, and any property damage or medical costs. The bill also requires contractors to use certified professionals for mold assessment and remediation, following national standards. Military families will have a 24/7 hotline and website to report problems, and they'll get inspection results within 10 days. Congress will receive quarterly reports on complaints, repairs, and contractor performance, and the public will get annual reports on mold problems and how they're being fixed.
