# Understanding the PEER Support Act

This bill aims to change that by giving peer support specialists a more formal place in the healthcare system.

Second, it creates a new Office of Recovery within the federal health agency to provide training, support, and guidance to peer specialists and the states that employ them. The bill also requires the federal government to study how states handle background checks for peer specialists, since having a criminal record can sometimes prevent people from getting certified even if they've been in recovery for years and could be excellent at helping others.
