# Understanding the Autism CARES Act of 2024

This bill extends and increases funding for federal autism research and support programs for another five years. Right now, several key autism programs are set to expire at the end of 2024, and this bill keeps them running through 2029 while giving them more money to work with.

The bill focuses on three main autism programs. First, there's a surveillance and research program that tracks autism cases across the country to understand how common it is and what factors might be involved. Second, there's an education and early detection program that helps identify autism in young children and gets them intervention services early on. Third, there's a coordinating committee made up of different government agencies that work together on autism issues. All three programs would continue operating under this bill instead of shutting down.

The money part is significant. The bill increases funding across these programs from roughly $370 million per year to about $425 million per year. For example, one program would get $5 million more annually, another would get about $5.7 million more, and the largest program would receive an additional $45 million per year. While this might sound like a lot, it's spread across nationwide research, surveillance systems, and educational initiatives. The practical effect is that universities, hospitals, and health departments doing autism research and early detection work would have more resources to expand their efforts and reach more families.

This bill doesn't create new programs or change how autism services work—it's essentially hitting the pause button on programs that were about to expire and giving them a funding boost to continue their work through the end of the decade.

Autism Collaboration, Accountability, Research, Education, and Support Act of 2024 or the Autism CARES Act of 2024This bill reauthorizes several programs that support autism education, research, and resources.Specifically, the bill reauthorizes through FY2029 (1) the Developmental Disabilities Surveillance and Research Program that is administered by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; (2) activities administered by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to support autism education, early detection, and intervention; and (3) the Interagency Autism Coordinating Committee in HHS.
