This bill makes it easier for Medicare to attract mental health and substance abuse treatment providers to areas where they're needed most. Right now, Medicare offers doctors a 10% bonus when they work in areas with doctor shortages. This bill expands that bonus program to include mental health specialists and adds a bigger incentive—a 15% bonus—specifically for providers treating mental health conditions and substance use disorders in areas that lack these specialists. The bill broadens who can get these bonuses beyond just doctors to include physician assistants, nurse practitioners, clinical social workers, psychologists, marriage and family therapists, and mental health counselors. Starting in 2027, any of these providers who treat patients for mental health issues or substance abuse in shortage areas will receive the bonus payment on top of their regular Medicare reimbursement. This is designed to address a real problem: many rural and underserved communities struggle to find mental health professionals, and the extra money should encourage more providers to practice in these areas where they're desperately needed.
