# The MATCH IT Act of 2024: Making Sure Your Medical Records Stay Yours

Right now, when you go to different hospitals, clinics, or doctors' offices, there's a surprisingly common problem: they can't always figure out that it's actually you. Your medical records might be split across multiple files, mixed up with someone else's information, or duplicated several times over. The MATCH IT Act tries to fix this mess by creating national standards for how healthcare providers identify and match patients to their correct medical records.

The bill tackles a real safety issue. When doctors can't find all your medical history, you might get prescribed medications that interact badly with drugs you're already taking, or you might undergo the same test twice because your previous results are in a different file. Hospitals estimate this problem costs them about $2.5 million per hospital annually, and the entire healthcare system loses over $6.7 billion a year because of mismatched records. Even worse, patient misidentification has caused serious medical errors and deaths. The bill also mentions that one out of every five patients might not be matched to all their records at some facilities, which is a staggering failure rate.

To solve this, the bill requires the federal government to create a standard definition of what "patient matching" actually means and establish a minimum set of information that healthcare providers must use to identify you correctly. Think of it like creating a universal ID system for medical records. The bill gives the government 180 days to work with hospitals, software companies, and patient groups to figure out what data elements are essential. Then healthcare IT systems that want government certification will have to include these patient-matching capabilities. The bill also creates a voluntary bonus program where Medicare providers can get extra payments if they achieve at least a 90 percent accuracy rate in matching patients to their records, though providers won't be penalized if they don't participate.
