# Public Lands in Public Hands Act

This bill stops the federal government from selling or transferring publicly accessible land to private companies, developers, or other non-government entities. Essentially, it's designed to keep certain federal lands in public ownership so they remain available for everyone to use.

The bill specifically protects two types of land: first, any federal land that people can currently access through public roads, trails, waterways, or easements; and second, any federal land that sits next to publicly accessible land or next to state and local government property that's publicly accessible. The idea is that if land is connected to places the public can already reach, it should stay public too. This prevents the government from selling off parcels that would cut off public access to other areas or create isolated pockets of private land within public territory.

There are some exceptions built in. The government can still transfer very small parcels—less than 300 acres, or less than 5 acres if accessible by water—under existing land management laws. Additionally, certain specific federal programs can still proceed, including Alaska Native land allotments, the Recreation and Public Purposes Act, and various other established land transfer programs. The bill also allows land exchanges (where the government trades one piece of land for another) and transfers that are explicitly authorized by other federal laws to continue.

For everyday people, this means the bill aims to preserve public access to federal lands for hunting, fishing, hiking, camping, and other outdoor recreation. It prevents scenarios where the government could sell off strategic pieces of public land to private interests, potentially blocking public access to forests, parks, and other natural areas that Americans currently use and enjoy.
