# Understanding the Intergovernmental Critical Minerals Task Force Act

This bill creates a new task force to help the United States reduce its dependence on China and other countries for critical minerals—materials essential for everything from smartphones and electric vehicles to military equipment and renewable energy systems. Right now, America imports 100% of 12 different critical minerals and relies on imports for over half of 31 others. China controls the production of 30 of the 50 minerals the U.S. considers critical, which the bill argues poses a serious national security risk.

The task force will bring together representatives from federal agencies, state and local governments, Native American tribes, and private sector experts to figure out how America can build its own supply chains for these minerals. They'll look at ways to increase domestic mining, processing, and recycling; identify which minerals the U.S. could realistically produce at home; and recommend changes to laws and policies that might be slowing down domestic production. The group will also work with U.S. allies like NATO countries and partners in the Middle East to develop shared strategies for securing these mineral supplies globally.

For most Americans, this bill won't have immediate effects, but it could influence long-term policy decisions affecting mining operations, environmental regulations, and manufacturing jobs in states with mineral resources. The task force has two years to complete its work and submit recommendations to Congress, after which it will dissolve. The bill also requires a separate government study on how federal and state regulations affect domestic mineral supply chains. Essentially, this is about making sure the U.S. isn't overly dependent on any single country for materials critical to national defense and modern technology.
