To put this in practical terms: if you volunteer with a meals-on-wheels program or similar organization and drive your own car to deliver food to homebound seniors or disabled people, you'd get a bigger tax deduction for those miles driven. The standard business mileage rate is usually several cents per mile higher than the charitable rate, so over the course of a year, volunteers could see a meaningful difference in their tax deductions. This makes volunteering slightly more financially rewarding for people who use their personal vehicles for these deliveries.

The bill applies to any miles driven after it becomes law, and it specifically targets meal delivery to people who are elderly, disabled, frail, or at-risk. Delivering Elderly Lunches and Increasing Volunteer Engagement and Reimbursements Act of 2022 or the DELIVER Act of 2022 This bill increases the standard charitable mileage rate for the delivery of meals to elderly, disabled, frail, and at-risk individuals. The rate shall be equal to the standard business mileage rate (58.5 cents per mile in 2022).
