The SECURE Health Act focuses on strengthening the global health workforce—the doctors, nurses, community health workers, and other frontline medical professionals who provide healthcare around the world. The bill recognizes that having trained, equipped, and supported health workers is essential for preventing disease outbreaks, saving lives (especially children's lives), and creating more stable countries that are less prone to conflict and instability.

Right now, about 4.5 billion people lack access to basic health services, and the world is projected to face a shortage of at least 11 million health workers by 2030. The bill aims to change this by having the U.S. government create a coordinated strategy for supporting these frontline workers globally. This includes funding for training, salaries, equipment, and protection—especially for workers operating in dangerous conditions like conflict zones or during disease outbreaks. The bill also emphasizes moving away from funding that targets only one disease (like HIV or malaria) toward more integrated approaches that help health workers address multiple health needs in their communities.

To make this happen, the bill creates a new Global Health Workforce Coordinator position within the State Department and establishes an interagency task force to coordinate efforts across all federal agencies involved in global health. The government will also publish annual reports showing how much money is being spent on health worker support and what results are being achieved, plus support an independent global report to track progress worldwide.
