The bill requires the Bureau to look at three main things: first, whether lenders are actually using educational information to judge your creditworthiness; second, whether lenders are using automated computer systems or algorithms that gather multiple data points about you to make lending decisions, and what risks those systems might create; and third, whether these practices unfairly harm people based on protected characteristics like race, gender, or national origin. The Bureau has to complete this assessment within 180 days and then do it again every year after that.

Once the Bureau finishes its investigation, it must publish its findings on a public website and share them with Congress. The public list will show which financial companies are using educational data in their lending decisions and which ones are using automated systems to evaluate borrowers. This transparency is meant to shine a light on practices that might be unfairly keeping certain people from getting loans based on where they went to school rather than their actual ability to repay.
