# What the Consistent Labeling for Political Ads Act Does

This bill requires large online platforms like Facebook, Google, and TikTok to clearly label who is paying for political advertisements. Right now, when you see a political ad online, you might not always know who's actually behind it. This bill says that whenever a political ad appears on a major platform, there has to be a visible notice telling you who sponsored it—whether it's a candidate, a political party, or some other organization. If the platform can't display the sponsor's name directly on the ad, it must at least say "this ad is sponsored by someone other than this platform."

The key innovation here is about sharing. Currently, when someone shares a political ad with their friends on social media, that sponsor label can sometimes disappear. This bill requires platforms to make sure the label stays attached to the ad even after people share it. So if your friend shares a political ad with you, you'll still see who paid for it, not just see the ad floating around without that information.

The rule applies to big platforms—ones with at least 50 million monthly visitors in the United States. It covers all kinds of political ads, including those about candidates, federal elections, and major national issues. The platforms have 120 days after the law passes to get their systems in place. Essentially, this is about transparency: voters get to know who's trying to influence them, and that information doesn't get lost when ads get shared around social media.
