# Hospital Inpatient Services Modernization Act

This bill extends a federal program that lets hospitals treat certain patients at home instead of keeping them in the hospital building. Right now, this "Acute Hospital Care at Home" program is set to expire in 2024, but this bill would keep it running through 2029, giving it five more years to operate.

Here's what this means in practical terms: If you're admitted to a hospital for certain acute (short-term, serious) conditions, you might be able to receive the same level of hospital care in your own home instead. A nurse or medical team would come to your house to provide treatment, monitoring, and medications just as they would in a hospital room. This could mean staying in your own bed, being around family, and avoiding the disruption of a hospital stay—while still getting intensive medical care when you need it.

The bill also requires the government to study how well this program is working. Specifically, it asks for two detailed reports—one by September 2024 and another by September 2028—looking at whether patients are getting good quality care, what the costs are, and how outcomes compare. The second report will specifically examine whether patients who go straight from an emergency room to home-based hospital care do as well as those who first spend time in a traditional hospital bed before transitioning home. This research will help determine whether the program should continue beyond 2029 or be modified based on what actually works.
