# Federal Employee Student Debt Transparency Act

This bill requires certain high-ranking federal government employees to publicly report how much student loan debt they owe. Specifically, it targets two groups: Senior Executive Service employees (top career officials in federal agencies) and Schedule C employees (political appointees who work in policy-making roles). These employees would need to disclose the outstanding balance on all their federal student loans, including direct loans and loans made through other federal programs.

The reporting requirements kick in fairly quickly. Employees already in these positions would have 60 days after the bill becomes law to file their first report, and then they'd need to file updated reports every year by February 28th. Anyone newly hired into one of these positions would have to file a report within 60 days of starting their job. The reports would show the exact amount of principal and interest owed on each federal student loan they hold.

Every May, the Office of Government Ethics would compile all this information and send a summary to Congress showing the total amount of student debt owed by all these employees combined. The report would also publicly name any employee who fails to file their required disclosure or doesn't report the information correctly. The idea behind this bill is to increase transparency about potential financial conflicts of interest among top government officials—the thinking being that if someone owes significant student debt, it might influence their decision-making on policies related to education or student loans.
