# Understanding the Tribal Climate Health Assurance Act of 2024

This bill creates a new federal program called the Climate Ready Tribes Initiative, which is designed to help Native American tribes prepare for and respond to health problems caused by climate change. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) would run this program in partnership with the National Indian Health Board, which represents tribal health interests. Essentially, the government is saying that climate change poses real health risks to tribal communities, and those communities need specialized support to deal with them.

The initiative would focus on five main goals. First, it would translate complicated climate science into information that tribal governments and health departments can actually use to make decisions. Second, it would create tools and resources to help tribes build their capacity to prepare for climate impacts. Third, it would position the CDC as a trusted leader in helping tribes plan for climate-related health emergencies. Fourth, it would help tribes identify specific health threats from climate change in their own communities and take action to reduce those risks. Finally, it would share information about funding and other resources available to help tribes address these challenges.

The bill would provide $110 million per year starting in 2025 to fund this work. This money would be specifically dedicated to the Climate Ready Tribes Initiative and cannot be redirected to other government programs. For tribal communities already dealing with limited healthcare resources and infrastructure challenges, this funding could support things like training health workers on climate-related illnesses, creating early warning systems for extreme weather events, or developing plans to protect vulnerable community members during heat waves or other climate emergencies.
