The Farmland for Farmers Act of 2026 bans most corporations and investment funds from buying agricultural land in the United States, with the goal of keeping farmland in the hands of individual family farmers. The bill recognizes that since 2008, large corporations—especially pension funds and investment companies—have increasingly bought up farmland, driving up prices and making it harder for regular farmers to compete. The law prevents unauthorized corporations from acquiring any new agricultural land ownership interests, though it allows several exceptions including land used for research, land owned by nonprofits and universities, municipal property, and land already owned by corporations before this law takes effect. The bill defines "authorized" entities as those with 25 or fewer owners who are all actively engaged in farming—meaning they actually work the land or make management decisions, not just provide money. Farmer-controlled cooperatives are also allowed to own land. The law is enforced through affidavits that entities must file when buying land or filing taxes, with violations reported to the Attorney General who can force companies to sell the land within a year. Penalties include fines up to twice the land's value for civil violations and up to 5 years in prison for individuals who knowingly violate the law. State attorneys general can also sue on behalf of their residents, with penalties of up to $3,000 per day of non-compliance.
