# Understanding the Endometriosis CARE Act

Endometriosis is a painful condition where tissue similar to the uterus lining grows in places it shouldn't—like in the pelvis, on organs, or other parts of the body. It causes severe pain, especially during periods, and can make it harder to get pregnant. Right now, there's no cure, though doctors can manage symptoms with medication or surgery. This bill is designed to tackle endometriosis from multiple angles: funding research to find better treatments, helping people understand the condition, and figuring out why some groups have a harder time getting care.

The bill directs the National Institutes of Health to spend $50 million per year (from 2025 through 2029) on endometriosis research and to create a searchable online database where patients and doctors can find information about treatments and research. It also funds public education campaigns about endometriosis, with special attention to reaching minority communities and underserved groups who may not know much about the condition or may face extra barriers to getting help. The government will spend $2 million annually on each of these education efforts—one aimed at the general public and another aimed specifically at training healthcare providers on how to better detect, diagnose, and treat endometriosis.

The bill also tackles a real problem: many people with endometriosis struggle to access treatment because of cost, lack of insurance coverage, transportation issues, or simply not enough doctors who know how to help. The Department of Health and Human Services will study these barriers by looking at insurance data and Medicaid records to understand what's blocking people from getting care. Within two years, they'll report their findings to Congress. Additionally, the bill funds a comprehensive study through the National Academies to examine disparities in endometriosis care across different racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic groups, with recommendations for how to fix these gaps. Overall, this bill aims to increase awareness, improve research, train doctors better, and ensure that endometriosis patients—particularly those from underrepresented communities—can actually access the care they need.
