# What This Bill Does: Counter-UAS Authority Security, Safety, and Reauthorization Act

This bill gives the federal government new powers to detect, track, and disable drones that pose a threat to national security. Specifically, it allows the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Justice to use technology to jam, disable, or take control of unmanned aircraft systems (drones) that are flying near sensitive locations like airports, government buildings, and major public events. The bill also requires these agencies to work closely with the Federal Aviation Administration to make sure their drone-stopping efforts don't interfere with regular airplane traffic or other legitimate aviation activities.

The bill creates a formal approval process for the types of equipment and technology that can be used to counter drones. Within a year of the law passing, the government must publish an official list of approved drone-detection and drone-stopping systems that have been tested and deemed safe for aviation. This list will specify what each system can do and where it can be used. Importantly, the bill blocks the government from using drone-defense equipment made by companies connected to countries like China that the U.S. considers trade violators or security concerns, though there are exceptions for research and testing purposes.

The bill also sets up new rules for airports and public venues. Large airports and major cargo hubs must develop plans for detecting and stopping drones that could interfere with flight operations. Additionally, the government must report regularly to Congress about how often it's using these drone-stopping powers and what threats it's responding to. The bill includes privacy protections, requiring that any communications intercepted during drone-defense operations be deleted quickly unless they're needed for criminal investigations, and restricting how widely this information can be shared within government agencies.
