# What the REGIME Act of 2023 Does

This bill is about keeping certain Iranian government officials out of the United States. Specifically, it directs the Secretary of State to review whether people connected to Iran's government currently have visas to enter America, and if they do, to cancel those visas. The law targets a pretty broad group of people: members of Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps, officers in Iran's military and police forces, current or former officials in Iran's government branches, and their immediate family members.

The practical effect is that if you fall into one of these categories and you have a visa to visit the United States, the government will review your case and likely revoke it. The bill gives the State Department 180 days to complete this review. So if you're an Iranian government official or a close family member of one who was planning to travel to America, this bill would prevent that from happening. The government has to complete this process fairly quickly—within about six months of the law taking effect.

There is one narrow exception built into the bill: people in these categories can still get visas if they're traveling to or from the United Nations headquarters in New York for official UN business. This carve-out exists because of international agreements the U.S. has with the United Nations that require allowing certain officials to travel for UN purposes.

For most Americans, this bill won't have any direct impact on their daily lives. It's primarily a foreign policy tool aimed at restricting travel by Iranian government officials and their families to the United States as a way to pressure Iran's government.

Revoking Entry Granted to Iranian Mullahs and Elites Act of 2023 or the REGIME Act of 2023 The bill requires the Department of State to conduct a review of certain Iranian officials and government employees, as well as their immediate family members, who currently have visas or who have applied for visas. If such individuals are determined to be ineligible for entry into the United States under specified laws, the State Department must revoke their visas.
