# What the Secure Storage Information Act of 2024 Does

This bill takes two main approaches to encourage safer firearm storage. First, it requires gun dealers to give customers information about how to safely store firearms whenever they buy a gun. Second, it offers a tax credit to help people afford storage devices like gun safes.

When you buy a firearm from a licensed dealer, the dealer must now provide you with written information about secure storage. This information will explain that firearms should be stored unloaded, kept away from children and unauthorized users, and stored separately from ammunition. The dealer's materials will also discuss the benefits of using locking devices and will compare different storage options—like full-size gun safes, lock boxes, trigger locks, and cable locks. The information will include data about how secure storage can reduce risks of suicide, accidental shootings, theft, and other harms. Gun dealers will also be required to stock a variety of storage devices for customers to purchase on the spot.

On the tax side, the bill creates a new tax credit that lets you deduct up to $500 total over your lifetime for purchasing gun safes or similar storage devices. If you buy a gun safe for $400, you could claim that $400 as a credit against your taxes. The credit applies to new safes, lock boxes, gun cases, and other secure storage devices designed to lock and store firearms. This credit is meant to reduce the cost barrier for people who want to store their firearms safely but might be deterred by the expense.

The bill takes effect six months after it becomes law, giving the Attorney General time to write specific regulations about what information dealers must provide and giving gun dealers time to adjust their inventory and procedures.
