# Understanding the Fueling Our Nuclear Future Act of 2022

This bill is about making sure the United States has enough of a special type of nuclear fuel called HALEU (high-assay, low-enriched uranium) to power a new generation of advanced nuclear reactors. Think of it as the government trying to build a domestic supply chain for nuclear fuel before new reactor designs actually need it.

Here's what's happening: Advanced nuclear reactors are being developed as a cleaner energy option, but they require HALEU fuel that's currently not being produced commercially in the United States. The bill does two main things to solve this problem. First, it tells the Department of Energy to start a program immediately to make HALEU available from existing government stockpiles for reactor demonstration projects—companies that are building these new reactors need fuel now, not years from now. The government has to provide at least 3 metric tons by September 2024, then 8 more metric tons by the end of 2025, and 10 more by mid-2026. Second, the bill requires the Department of Energy to work on establishing a commercial HALEU production industry in the United States, with a goal of having at least 20 metric tons produced per year by 2027 or as soon as possible after that.

The bill also puts money behind these goals—$200 million per year through 2027 for providing fuel from government stockpiles, and $150 million per year through 2032 for developing commercial production. To help fund this, the bill transfers money from an old government fund (the United States Enrichment Corporation Fund) that's no longer being used. There's also an important restriction: the government won't use uranium from Russia or China, ensuring the fuel supply stays domestic and independent.

For everyday people, this matters because it's an investment in nuclear energy as part of America's energy future. If these advanced reactors work as hoped, they could provide reliable, low-carbon electricity. However, this also represents a significant government commitment of hundreds of millions of dollars, which taxpayers are funding through appropriations.

Fueling Our Nuclear Future Act of 2022 This bill modifies provisions under the Energy Act of 2020 concerning high-assay, low-enriched uranium (HALEU), including by directing the Department of Energy (DOE) to (1) establish a program to accelerate the availability of commercially produced HALEU in the United States, and (2) accelerate or initiate activities to make HALEU available from DOE's inventories for use by advanced nuclear reactors.
