# Language Access for Workers Act

This bill requires employers and the government to provide safety warnings and workplace information in languages that workers actually understand, not just in English. Right now, when companies label dangerous chemicals or provide safety instructions, they typically only use English. This bill says that if workers speak a different language as their primary language, they need to get that same critical safety information in their language too. The goal is straightforward: workers can't protect themselves from workplace hazards if they can't read or understand the warnings.

The bill makes this requirement part of federal workplace safety rules overseen by the Department of Labor. Companies would need to translate safety labels, warning signs, training materials, and employment contracts into the languages their workers speak. The translations also need to match workers' education levels and literacy—so if someone has limited formal education, the translation can't use overly complex vocabulary. The government has six months to update all the official safety standards to include this language requirement.

To help employers and organizations meet these new requirements, the bill creates a grant program where the Department of Labor gives money to eligible organizations to provide translation services. These grants would prioritize areas with lots of migrant workers and industries like agriculture and service work, where language barriers are most common. Organizations receiving grants would need to report annually on how many workers they helped and what types of assistance they provided, giving Congress data on whether the program is actually working.

The practical impact is that workers who speak Spanish, Vietnamese, Mandarin, or any other language would have the same access to critical safety information as English speakers. This could prevent injuries and deaths in workplaces where language barriers currently leave workers confused about hazards. For employers, it means additional costs for translation services, though the grant program is designed to help offset some of those expenses, particularly for smaller organizations and those serving immigrant communities.
