# Wildlife Movement Through Partnerships Act: What You Need to Know

This bill creates two new federal programs designed to help animals like deer, elk, and pronghorn move safely across the landscape, especially during migration seasons. The core idea is that wildlife populations need connected pathways to travel between their winter and summer habitats, and this bill provides money and coordination to make that happen.

The first program is a grant system that will distribute federal funding to states, tribes, nonprofits, universities, and other organizations working on wildlife habitat. These grants can pay for things like buying land or conservation easements, modifying fences to let animals pass through, fixing roads to reduce vehicle collisions with wildlife, and improving water sources in migration areas. The federal government will cover up to 90 percent of project costs, though applicants need to contribute at least 10 percent themselves (which can be in-kind donations or volunteer work). The bill sets aside at least half of all funding specifically for big game animals like elk and deer. The second program gives money directly to state fish and wildlife agencies and tribal governments to research and map where animals actually migrate, helping identify which areas need protection most.

The bill also expands an existing program called Partners for Fish and Wildlife to include migration corridor work on private and tribal lands, and it directs the U.S. Geological Survey to continue mapping wildlife movement areas while protecting sensitive information about exact locations. A new federal coordinator position will oversee everything and make sure different agencies work together instead of duplicating efforts. Importantly, the bill includes strong protections: it explicitly states that nothing in the law can force changes to farming, ranching, or forestry practices, can't restrict hunting or fishing access, and doesn't give the federal government new power over state wildlife management or tribal sovereignty.
